Mahalaya is the day from when Durga Puja for the Bengalies in India begin. From the day of Mahalaya Pitripaksh ends and Debipaksh begins.

On the day of Mahalaya numerous number of religious minded persons have holy bath in the sacred Ganges. That is the day when the fathers and ancient ancestors are offered puja and prayers and they are remembered. On the banks of river Ganges with the chanting of mantras, using teel and gangamud the devotees offer the pujas. In the different bathing ghats of river Ganges in Kolkata there is always very serious crowding. Some of the known

ghats include Shovabazaar Ghat, Bagbazaar Ghat, Ahiritola Ghat, Babughat, Dakhineswar Ghat, etc.

In Durga puja, for the 4 days, Mahashasti, mahasaptami, mahaashtami and mahanabami the devotees offer puja to Goddess Durga. On the day of Mahadashami the entire puja session is over and the idols of Goddess Durga, Mahishashura, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, God Ganesh and Lord Kartika are immersed in holy Ganges.

On the day of Mahalaya, the play Mohishashur Mordini is played in different radio channels including All India Radio. The Mohishasur Mordini relates to killing of the famous demon Mahishashura by Goddess Durga. It is the victory of good forces over evil forces. Mahishashura assumed power by boon of Lord Brahma who told him that he could be killed only by a woman. He misused his power and attacked

Gods out of Tribhuban. Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara and other Gods used their spirits to give birth to Goddess Durga, who with her bahana lion fought against Mahishashura and his demons and killed him to bring peace in the world.

On the day of Mahalaya, the famous play Mohishashura Mordini is played in All India Radio. The play was created by Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Bani Kumar and Pankaj Mallick. Along with Sanskrit slokas including “yadevi sarbabhueshu shantirupeshu samasthita, namasthashai namasthashai namasthashai namonamahah”, there is abohoni songs which are devotional welcoming ma durga. The good songs sung include “tobo achinto” sung by Manobendra Mukherjee, “jago tumi jago” sung by Dwijen Mukherjee, “bajlo tomar alor benu” sung by Supriti Ghosh, “ogo amar” sung by Shipra Bose, to name a few.

Just like Durga Puja for bengalies other important festivals for the other group of hindus like Navratra begins at the same time. Dussehra is also celebrated at different parts of the country.

On the day of Mahalaya, everyone prays so that the appearance of Ma Durga can bring peace and prosperity in everyone’s lives.
